Hero of the Month – Hero Review

Telluria Hero Review- March 2020 HOTM

Empires and puzzles Telluria

Stats:
Attack 613 | Defense 832 | HP 1425
Class: Tank
Resist: : Resist Minion Removal – The Hero has an innate ability to resist Minion Removal.
Element: Nature/Green
Special: Force of Forest
Mana Speed : Average (10 tiles)

  • Deals 130% damage to all enemies.
  • Summons a Forest Familiar Minion for all allies with 18% HP and 13% attack inherited from the caster.
  • All allies regenerate 411 HP over 3 turns.
  • All enemies get -34% mana generation for 3 turns.
  • Element Link gives all Nature allies +10% critical chance for 6 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled.

Telluria Hero Review:

In terms of healing, the closest hero that comes to Telluria is Delilah. Delilah’s Special, Summon Temple Guardians is average speed, Recovers 33% health for all allies & Summon a temple Guardian for each ally with 13% hp and 16% attack inherited from the caster.

A typical 5 star hero has a health range of 1100hp to 1500 hp. This allows Delilah to heal for about 363hp to 500hp instantly, with another 13% hp from the minion.

In comparison, Telluria heals for a similar amount as a Heal over Time (HoT) instead, with a beefier minion (since Telluria has more health as compared to Delilah)

Additionally, Telluria deals damage and has a mana generation debuff on the enemies.

Check out this link for an indepth understanding of how the mana generation debuff would effect your opponents.

Telluria in Offense

In Offensive Raids, Telluria does not seem to have a strong fit – her special makes her an average healer, mediocre support and mediocre damage dealer.

A Jack of all trades but master of none.

That being said, Telluria will still be helping you to win raid battles in your team – her role mainly to slow your opponents down while you charge up the rest of your team to fire your specials.

Telluria will fit quite well in a 4-1 or 3-1-1 formation. Telluria should be able to buy quite a bit of time for your main heroes if the starting board was not in your favour.

Telluria in Defense

Telluria’s stats make him extremely suitable for the Tank role. Combined with her healing and mana generation reduction, it makes it extremely annoying for opponents to deal with him.

Ideally, Telluria’s Heal over Time and Mana reduction should buy your other heroes enough time to charge up your specials. However, the lack of any defence increment, or attack reduction make Telluria vulnerable to tile damage. Successive activation of Telluria’s specials only cause the Heal over Time to refresh it’s duration.

In comparison against the most popular tank at the moment, Kunchen, I personally still think that Kunchen would edge out Telluria as the number 1 tank. This is because of the following.

  1. Kunchen provides an immediate heal of 42% to all allies
  2. Kunchen’s elemental link provides +46% defense against Holy
  3. Kunchen’s Defense reduction make your opponent’s team easy picking for your snipers.
  4. Kunchen has Defense reduction resistance
  5. Kunchen’s Talent Grid has resistance against mana control effects, as compared to increase defense for the Paladin Talent.

Telluria is definitely a top tier tank, just not the best.

Telluria against Titans

Telluria definitely not a strong consideration to bring to a titan fight.

She does not have tile damage, nor synergistic specials.

The only upside that Telluria has for Titans is her Critical Chance buff to the rest of your allies.

Jean-François Hero Review – February 2020 HOTM

Stats:
Attack 737 | Defense 723 | HP 1332
Class: Wizard
Resist: : Health Steal Ailments – The Hero has an innate ability to resist status ailments that Steal Health.
Element: Fire/Red
Special: Seal of fire
Mana Speed : Fast (8 tiles)

  • All enemies receive 302 Burn damage over 2 turns.
  • All allies get +94% defense against Ice for 4 turns.
  • All allies get Defense Status Ailment Protection for 4 turns. New status ailments affecting defense will be replaced by +42% defense for 4 turns.
  • Element Link gives all Fire allies +10% critical chance for 6 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled.

Jean-François Hero Review:

When talking about Burn damage, the first hero that comes to mind would definitely be Gravemaker. Gravemaker has been an insanely popular hero –
GRAVEMAKER remains the undisputed “KING of the HILL” for 36 consecutive collection periods! Dating back to August 2018.

#1 Gravemaker in 51.14% of the Top-100 teams; same spot, 1 duplicate use.”

Source: titanmafia.com

Gravemaker does 298 burn damage over 2 turns to 3 targets & 135% attack damage. While Jean-Francois does 302 burn damage over 2 turns to 5 targets, and being 1-2 tile slower.

Burn damage is affected by attack increment on troops (not affected by other buffs and defense modifiers.)

For those who have used Gravemakers, or fought against Gravemakers before, you will know that the initial damage isn’t really much – its the burn over time that really hurts.

This means that Jean-Francois will deal a minimum of 302 damage per hero once his special skill lands. At a fast mana speed, this amount of damage is really significant, as much as every other fast aoe heros (Zeline, Vela) which usually averages about 300-400 damage per hero.

The rest of Jean-Francois buff’s are really icing on the cake. The damage already makes him highly viable for a placement in most raid teams.

There are downsides to having burn damage instead of direct damage. Jean-Francois will not be able to prevent enemy heroes from activiating their special skill / attack on offensive raids (Damage over time on enemy heroes ALWAYS take place AFTER special skill and attack)

Jean-François in Offense

On offense, you should be able to maximize the damage output of Jean-Francois easily. You simply have to avoid status ailments resist and status ailment cures on the opponent team (Rigard, Ariel, Vivica, Zimthika etc).

Along with his fast mana charge, you should be able to take out your opponent with relative ease and speed.

The downside is that Jean-Francois is unable to prevent opponents from firing their special skills as the DoT will only take place at the end of the opponent’s turn.

Jean-François in Defense

For the attacker, Damage over time effects take place BEFORE special skill activation and tile matching.

This means that Jean Francois has a high probability of taking out opponents healers before they are able to activate any special skill. This is what makes Gravemaker such a royal pain in the *ss to play against.

Jean-Francois has further defensive buffs that make it difficult for your opponents to take him down, considerably harder to kill than compared to Gravemaker.

Jean-François against Titans

Choice of heroes on titan fight are based on the following criteria
1. Does the special skill allow me to deal more damage?
2. Attack Stat

In this case, Jean-Francois has a Critical Damage buff for his teammates, and a relatively decent attack stat.

Sadly, his defensive buffs against Green/Nature titans does not do much, neither does his special.

Vela Hero Review – January 2020 HOTM

Stats:
Attack 743 | Defense 729 | HP 1303
Class: Druid
Resist: Minions – The Hero has an innate ability to resist incoming negative effects and damage from minions.
Element: Ice
Special: Aquatic Outbreak
Mana Speed : Fast (8 tiles)

  • Deals 150% damage to all enemies.
  • All enemies receive 208 damage over 4 turns
  • All Fire enemies get -54% attack for 4 turns
  • Deals extra damage against Fire
  • Element Link gives all Ice allies +10% critical chance for 6 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled.

Vela Hero Review

Vela is extremely similar to Zeline. The differences being their element, and their attack reduction. (Zeline targets all enemy heroes, while Vela only targets Fire heroes)

Apart from the selective status ailments against Fire enemies, Vela has additional damage, better stats, and more buffs than Zeline

Vela in Offense

Vela excels when the opponent has extensive Fire heroes in their defence (2-3 Fire heroes). Otherwise, Vela will only be doing little damage (150% compared to Kadilen @ 190%) and some water damage with her special. You would be better off bringing any other Ice heroes if you are facing a rainbow team with a Fire Tank

However, when you do find the right situation for Vela, she will wreck havoc on your opponents.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Vela in Defense

Vela does not fit into the tank position too well because she has relatively less tanky stats.

However, she can be built to be in a tank position because her druid talent can somewhat provide a mini-heal to her. She is also able to significantly weaken your opponents such that your snipers will be able to take out your enemies with ease.

Vela fits in the Flank/wing position where by you your tank and/or flank heroes promote the opponent to bring Fire heroes in their offensive raids. An example would be :
Vela | Nature | Fire | Nature | Any Element
or
Nature | Vela | Nature | any element | any element set up.

The idea behind such a defence is that a your opponent will want to double or even triple up Red heroes to be able to tank out your tank and flank position quickly.

Vela would punish them for such a set up and make it difficult for your enemies to play around.

Read more about setting up your teams for raid defense here.

Vela VS Titans

Vela helps with suitability against Titans, and the bonus critical chance to your Ice heroes also add a significant amount of tile damage.

Overall, not a must for titans, but viable to use against titans. (Unlike Grimble)

Kingston Hero Review – October 2019 HOTM

Empires and Puzzles Hero of the month HOTM Kingston

Stats: 749 ATK | 735 DEF | 1266HP
Special: Stiletto Cyclone
Speed : Fast
Deals 445% damage to the target.
All enemies get -31%attack, and a further 4% decrease every time they are hit during 4 turns.
Element link mana 4%

Kingston in most aspects is very comparable to Lianna. Lianna has slightly lesser stats that Kingston, but she more than makes up for it with her higher single target special (512% compared to 445%). Lianna has an attack stat of 729 while Kingston has an attack stat of 749. The difference in damage is between 50-200 in raids depending on the defense of your target.

However Kingston provides much more utility in the form of his attack reduction debuff on enemy heroes. This attack down debuff can save your team in many situations, often buying enough time for you to charge up your healers.

Kingston in Offensive raids

Often at times when using a regular sniper, your objective will be to take down an enemy hero that is about to fire their special skill. However, most of the time it is usually a few heroes that are about to fire their special skill at the same time.

This is where kingston really shines. Kingstone will be able to neutralise (kill) one target, and at the same time, really negating the incoming damage that is going to come from the rest of the opponent team.

Kingston in Defence team

On defence it is an annoying debuff to play around, but an opponent can simply wait it out before firing off their specials, or sending a huge wave of tiles.

Kingston fits well in the wing or flank position, to help with the durability of your tank.

Kingston VS titan

Against titan, Kingston has good stats to deal sufficient tile damage to any titan, plus with the debuff helps to ensure that your team would be able to have great sustainability against the titan.

Kingston definitely fits well into the tile damage spot for the titan team after defence reduction, attack boost buffs are taken care of.

Grazul Hero Review – September 2019 HOTM

Empire and Puzzles hero of the month (HOTM) Grazul
September 2019

Stats – Defensive, Above average
Special: Mending Mantra
Speed: Very Fast
Effect:
Recovers 15% health for all allies
All allies are immune to new status ailments for 2 turn
Element Link 4% mana generation for 4 turns

Grazul in Offense

Grazul’s heal, at 15% is barely significant in most situations. Without assistance from mana generation buffs, you are healing 15% every 7 tiles, while Rigard heals for 42% for 10 tiles (average speed). Furthermore, the additional effect that Rigard has (curing status ailments on allies) are similar. Rigard is unable to block effects that cannot be dispelled, and for Grazul being able to block status ailments for 2 turns.

The key to effective use is timing Grazul’s special skill.

This makes Grazul a high skillcap hero. Difficult to time, easy to miss. But the rewards are great when you are facing heroes such as Drake Fong, Justice, Alice, Onatel, White Rabbit, Gravemaker etc. Where 2 turns of protection is worth more than 1 turn of status ailment removal.

However, when you are not facing troublesome heroes, Boldtusk/Rigard/Kiril are more effective healers than Grazul. with more beneficial special effects.

However, the number of these “troublesome” heroes are plentiful at Diamond ranks, and that is where Grazul can shine.

Grazul in Defense

Grazul might have very strong defensive stats – however, the low amount of heal does not add much value to your team.

He is still viable as a Tank, just a lot weaker in comparison to a talented Boldtusk or Rigard. (for the same quantity of emblems)

Grazul VS Titans

Just bring a Boldtusk along. Similar defensive capabilities, with the added bonus of increasing attack for the rest of your teams.

Baldur Hero Review

Attack: 807
Defense: 696
HP: 1326

Class: Ranger
Realm: Muspelheim
Element: Red/Fire

Mana Speed: Average (10 Tiles)

Special Skill: Unbreakerable Brawler

  • Boosts health of the caster by 1000. If health exceed max HP, it is added as temporary HP. Max temporary HP is 100% of max HP. Boosted health counters max HP reduction.
  • All allies resist effects that drain mana for as long as the caster has boosted health. This effect cannot be dispelled.
  • Deals 110% damage to a random enemy each turn for as long as the caster has boosted health. This effect cannot be dispelled.

Baldur Hero Review:

Baldur’s special skill has a very interesting mechanic. Stats wise his defense is not very high, but has a significantly high attack stat.

Baldur in Offensive raids

In offensive raids, due to poor AI targeting, once Baldur is able to activate his special, the damage that he inflicts can be quite consistent. It is only the occasional snipe from enemy heroes to target him that would stop him, and that is a 1 in 5 chance.

Also, Baldur has great ability to turn raids around. His self-heal ability + damage means that you can continuously shoot down enemy heroes without having to charge up their mana. Subsequent activation of Baldur’s special would result in a heal for himself as well.

The major downside to Baldur’s special is that the damage he deals is to a random target. That means you can’t use his special to Snipe a target that is about to fire, Baldur is not as good against teams with healers (as you typically want to snipe healers/resurrections away asap).

In tournaments – (Yet to confirm) – HP boost works for bloody battles.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Baldur in Defense

Baldur’s special combined with his stats actually makes him neither a tank, nor a striker.

His low defense is balanced out with the huge HP boost, and his high attack stat is moderated with a low modifier (100%) on his damage.

At a Tank position, Baldur would receive too much damage too quickly without being able to deal much damage, or make any significant impact to enemy team.

At Flank position, Baldur can be supported by heroes like Zeline, Heimdall etc in the tank position. Zeline’s attack debuff can help allow for maximum uptime on Baldur’s buff, while Heimdall’s Attack boost can help to maximize damage on the attack.

Read more about setting up your teams for raid defense here.

Baldur against Titans

Baldur makes a very good fit for the position of tile damage.

Tyr Hero Review

Attack: 760
Defense: 756
HP: 1312

Class: Fighter
Realm: Helheim
Element: Fire/Red

Mana Speed: Fast

Special Skill: Adamantite Claw

Empires and Puzzles Hero Tyr
  • Deals 285% damage to the target.
  • The attack has a 60% chance to bypass all defensive buffs. This includes counterattacks.
  • The target receives 196 Bleed damage over 4 turns. This effect stacks with similar effects.
  • The caster regenerates 548 HP over 4 turns.
  • If the caster dies during the next 4 turns they are resurrected in the beginning of the next turn with 32% health. All status effects are removed when the caster dies.

Tyr Hero Review:

Tyr feels very similar to Elkanen – Dealing an amount of damage and providing a self-heal. In further comparison, you will also notice that Tyr has a significantly lower damage output, but makes up for it with a self-resurrection buff.

This puts Tyr’s special skewed more towards the defensive side. Coupled with his self-revive fighter talent, he can be quite annoying to deal with.

Tyr’s resurrection is considered a buff and can be dispelled.

Tyr Realm also causes damage on death – This can make it rather potent if he has a full family on the defense team. Definitely something worth considering when placing him in the defense team.

Tyr in Offensive raids

Tyr is awkward in Offensive raids – he does not have enough damage output, he does not help the rest of your team survive longer if you have poor boards.

Despite that, Tyr himself has high durability and could come in handy as the last man standing to help you win your raids.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Tyr in Defense

Tyr’s more defensive special allows him to take up tank/flank position by making it more difficult for your opponents to reach the wing positions.

However, Tyr’s stats are more balanced, instead of having high defense and hp.

Tyr also lacks buffs for your allies (e.g. attack increase so that your team can kill the opponent faster while Tyr soaks up the damage), or debuffs on the enemies.

Read more about setting up your teams for raid defense here.

Tyr against Titans

Tyr has high survivability against titans, but lack any form of damage output or buffs for your allies to increase your overall damage output.

Still, Tyr can be used for tile damage if you have a lack of other suitable heroes

Freya Hero Review

Attack: 766
Defense: 743
HP: 1339

Class: Druid
Realm: Vanaheim
Element: Dark/Purple

Mana Speed: Fast

Special Skill: Raven’s Vigil

Empires and Puzzles Hero Freya
  • Summons a Raven Minion for each ally with 20% HP and 20% attack inherited from the caster.
  • Raven Minion gives +120% attack to all its owner’s other Minions.
  • All allies get +30% defense for 4 turns.

Freya Hero Review:

Her current abilities gives her allies a heal for about 240hp, and a bunch of minions.

Based on current observations, minions usually have 10% to 20% attack inherited from the caster.

Raven Minions adds 120% to that attack, making it 22% to 44% (which is about a single tile worth of damage)

Raven minions do not increase attack for other Raven Minions.

The defense increase that Freya gives also helps to increase the durability of the minions, since minions are “extra hp” and damage taken to the minions are still based on the owner’s defense.

Overall, I am currently of the impression that minions are still rather insignificant – but that could otherwise change, with Freya’s special. Will this improvement be significant enough that a full on minion team will be viable? (Seshat, Puss in boots, Delilah, Mother North?)

Freya in Offensive Raids

Freya can be considered as a fast healer for 20%hp and adds minor damage output for your team overall. However, the damage output is rather insignificant as it is too random, due to the random targeting nature of minions

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Freya in Defense

On defense, fast healers can be rather annoying to deal with. However freya does not have enoguh defense stats or hp to survive on it’s own as tank. Freya is also unable to slow down opponents via debuff or buffs (Significantly – defense increase buff is minor and is easily countered).

Fenrir Hero Review

Attack: 780
Defense: 737
HP: 1297

Class: Fighter
Realm: Niflheim
Element: Ice/Blue

Mana Speed: Fast

Special Skill: Gargantuan Bite

Empires and Puzzles Hero Fenrir
  • Deals 300% damage to the target.
  • Deals 600% damage if the target has less than 50% health remaining.
  • The caster gains a moderate amount of mana for each enemy killed and a small amount of mana for each enemy minion killed.
  • Heals the caster for 50% of damage dealt.

Fenrir Hero Review:

Remember Greymane? He evolved to Fenrir.

300% Damage is rather insignificant, but 600% damage is the highest fast single target special skill there is out there. Lianna only has 512% damage, without any bonus like a self heal, or mana generation. Lianna has 729 Base attack stat, while Fenrir has 780 base attack stat.

This works out to a 15-20% more damage on Fenrir’s special compared to liana (assuming conditions are met.)

In my opinion, the damage is really the main effect of Fenrir’s special. The rest of it is just icing on the cake. Cool benefits, but not that note worthy.

Fenrir in Offensive raids

Fenrir’s special truly shines when the conditions are met – therefore on your offense raids, you will want to pair Fenrir with another sniper for a one-two punch kill.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Fenrir in Defense team

Fenrir is really quite bad in the defense team.

The ONLY reason being that AI – targeting by defensive teams are just terrible. Which means Fenrir’s special will be very under utilized on the defense.

Read more about setting up your teams for raid defense here.

Fenrir against Titans

Against titans, most of the damage is dealt by tile damage, not by Special Skills. The fact that Fenrir’s special will do less damage for half of the titan is inconsequential to your titan fights.

Instead – Fenrir’s higher than average attack stat makes him a great contender for the tile damage position for titan fights.

  • The caster and nearby allies counterattack with 100% of the damage received for 4 turns.
  • The caster and nearby allies reduce all received damage by 50% for 4 turns.
  • The caster and nearby allies get +24% mana generation for 4 turns.

Sif Hero Review:

Sif deals the counter attack damage first before the defensive buff is applied.

That being said, counterattack buffs are a passive aggressive special – it waits for something to be done to you before anything is done to the opponent.

Sif in Offensive raids

Unusable.

Just like how Cyprian and Boril make terrible heroes for offensive raids. The fact that a counterattack buff, damage reduction and mana generation does not have any immediate results on the battlefield is a big nono for me.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Sif in Defense

Unlikely to see Sif in much defensive positions because counterattack buffs are very passive buffs that are not favored in the current meta of defensive heroes.

This is the reason why in spite of being the tankiest hero in the game, Boss Wolf does not see much play as tank or flank.

Ratatoskr hero review

Attack: 753
Defense: 741
HP: 1353

Class: Monk
Family: Alfheim
Element: Nature/Green

Mana Speed: Average

Special Skill: Nuts of Yggrasil

Empires and Puzzles hero Ratatoskr
  • Recovers 42% health for all allies.
  • All Nature shields on the board become enhanced. Enhanced shields have +64% attack when attacking hero casts the special and -57% attack when defending hero casts the special.

Ratatoskr Hero Review:

Ratatoskr is another interesting healer + support hero that works both on offense and on defense.

In offensive raids (& PvE), the enhanced shields deal extra damage against enemies.

In a defense team, Nuts of Yggrasil works by reducing the damage that enemy Nature hero does by tile damage.

As there is no duration (turns) stated on the special skill, I am under the assumption that the Special only affects the current board state. New Nature tiles will be normal tiles.

Ratatoskr in Offensive raids

Utilizing Nuts of Yggdrasil to it’s maximum effect is a matter of timing – does the rest of your team require the heal now, or can you wait a few more turns to collect more Nature tiles on the board?

The worst case scenario for Nuts of Yggdrasil is when you have a board that has zero Nature tiles. Even then, every offensive team requires a healer, and Ratatoskr is able to heal a significant 42% hp.

In the best case scenario, you have a whole board of Nature tiles and you are able to wipe out your enemies in a flash.

Overall, Ratatoskr can potentially provide you with a massive buff that can win you the round, without much downside/sacrifice.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Ratatoskr in Defense

Ratatoskr is extremely unreliable in defense.

The best way to use Ratatoskr is to put Rataoskr as flank, with an Ice tank to make it difficult for your opponents to take down your tank.

Even then, apart from the heal, the defensive qualities of the enhanced nature tiles are too inconsistent to be used effectively.

Read more about setting up your teams for raid defense here.

Ratatoskr against Titans

Ratatoskr has great potential against Titans.

It is yet to be determined if enhanced Nature tiles are able to stack with buffs on heroes. It is also yet to be determined if Enhanced tiles are able to deal damage about the damage cap of specials from Tarlak, Miki etc.

Rataoskr could also be a contender for Tile damage position as his special can be unreliable especially when you have a poor board with little Nature tiles. However, when you spot an opportunity for Ratatoskr, the additional damage can be very substansial.

Heimdall Hero Review

Attack: 655
Defense: 836
HP: 1402

Class: Paladin
Family: Asgard
Element: Nature/Green

Mana Speed: Slow

Special Skill: Boon of Gjllarhorn

Empires and Puzzles Hero Heimdall
  • Boosts health of all allies by 500. If health exceeds max HP, it is added as temporary HP. Max temporary HP is 100% of max HP. Boosted health counters max HP reduction.
  • Each fallen ally has a 20% chance to get revived with 30% HP.
  • All allies get +30% attack for 4 turns.

Heimdall Hero Review:

Heimdall is a slow healer. Most healers ( Vivica, Ariel, Kunchen, ) heal for about 40% hp. 95% Legendary heroes of hp between 1200 to 1400. Heimdall’s heal is therefore par for the course.

Heimdall’s heal being a “HP boost” which is a new effect, is very effective for a secondary healer in your team (with a percentage based heal).

Heimdall also adds on an attack boost and revive for the rest of your allies.

Unlike Alberich, revived fallen allies will not receive any HP Boost from Heimdall.

Further testing is required to test if “HP boost” is considered a buff and can be dispelled.

Heimdall in Offensive raids

Heimdall has quite a bit of potential for offensive raids, being that he provides an attack buff, revive and heal for the team. He is an extremely potent support hero.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Heimdall in Defense

There is a bit of dilemma when placing Heimdall on defense. On one hand, Heimdall provides strong heal, has very high defensive stats (top 95 percentile of durability). He therefore fits the tank position very well.

At the same time, you could also place Heimdall on the wings to maximize the revive on his special.

Both positions are highly viable and would ultimately depend on which other heroes you have that can be in the tank position.

Heimdall helps the team with durability against the titans, AND provide an attack buff that stacks with other buffs that are commonly used in titan fights.

Black Knight Hero Review

Empire and Puzzles Knights of Avalon Black Knight

Stats – Heavily Defensive, above average
Special: Just a flesh wound
Speed: Average (10 tiles)
Effect:
The caster has a 50% chance to drop any received damage to 1 for 3 turns.
The caster gets Taunt that prevents enemies from using special skills on the caster’s allies for 3 turns.
All allies get +45% attack and a further 20% increase everytime they are hit for 3 turns.

Very interesting special, works much better than having a minion as taunt. The effects of the special are very synergistic and work very well in offence and defence. His taunt ability also prevents dispel on affecting his allies. Which makes a double dispel against him necessary when fighting Black Knight paired with Aegir.

The Black Knight on Offense

His Taunt ability is very useful in drawing fire from enemies, allowing you to charge up mana for your other heroes.

Combined with his high defense and HP, The Black Knight will be able to “tank” 2-3 special skills at the minimum before dying, giving your ample opportunity to charge up your specials on other heroes.

Therefore, in order to use The Black Knight efficiently, timing his special right before enemies’ special is crucial.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

The Black Knight in Defense

The Black Knight can be placed in a Tank or Flank position. His high defensive stats help to maximize the chances that he will likely be able to get his special going before dying.

In Flank position, he can support the tank by preventing your enemies from sniping the tank.

Although he can be played around by “waiting” for the buff duration to be over, it can be a very risky strategy for the attacker, as the attacker would have to survive a few hits from the berserker buffed heroes.

Read more about setting up your teams for raid defense here.

The Black Knight VS Titans

Against Titans, Black Knight is so-so. He does not have the tile damage, but he can provide an attack increase boost buff to 3 allies. The other benefit is that the titan’s special will only hit Black Knight.

However, when all is said and done, Boldtusk far outshines The Black Knight against titans, providing a comparable Attack boost to all your teammates, without having to be damaged by the titan.

Boldtusk’s buff also negates Nature Titan’s special effect.

Lady of the Lake hero review

Empire and Puzzles Knights of Avalon Lady of the Lake

Stats – Balanced, Above average.
Special: Magical Sword
Speed : Slow (12 tiles)
Recovers 42% health for all allies.
Summons a Magical Sword Minion for the caster and nearby allies with 14% HP and 15% attack inherited from the caster.
The minion removes 10% mana from the target when it hits them

Lady of the Lake on Offense

Lady of the lake can be used as a generic healer as her heal is quite substantial (counting the heal from her minions as well).

It is also easier to sustain Minions on offensive than in defense. Which means that you will be constantly having a few minions. Furthermore minions also fire after special skills, and after tiles. Which means that your minions can be quite effective at preventing enemies from firing their special skills. (As compared to Li Xiu, or Chao, where after reducing enemy’s mana, your tiles charge them back to full again).

Lady of the lake on Defense

Mana control is always awesome. Being able to prevent heroes from firing their special skill + strong defensive abilities is what made Guinevere such a monster in the tank position.

However, Guinevere special is average speed and affects all enemies & her heal over time heals. The total heal amount is comparable to Lady of the Lake’s healing.

In typical situations, the first 1% of mana reduction is already effective in defense. Your opponents will have to match tiles (and charge up mana), and then his/her turn is already over. Which means your other heroes get to go again, and your minions (if alive) get to go again.

It is can be very very difficult to recover from if your opponent is having a hard time killing your minions.

The downside is that Lady of the Lake’s special is at slow speed, and her defensive stats are rather average.

Lady of the Lake Vs. Titans

Lady of the Lake does not fit into any role against titans. Against titans she can be very effective at preventing the Titan from firing special. (As titans always have problems dealing with minions).

However, that is not the goal of a titan fight. The goal of a titan fight is to deal as much damage as possible, as quickly as possible. This essentially means that your go to heroes are Buddy & Evelyn, along with other heroes that have high attack stats.

  • If the target has buffs, targets another enemy with buffs. If none of the other enemies have buffs, targets a random enemy. The damage is reduced on each consecutive hit. Each enemy can only be hit once.
  • All hit targets get -34% defense for 3 turns.

Finley Hero Review

The animation is amazing, the effect is great.

In today’s Raid Meta, there are plenty of buffs whether you’re on defense or on offense. Which means that his effect will almost always hit 3 targets both on offense and on defense.

Putting that into perspective, the damage is also quite significant. Special skill at 385% for a single target is also quite high (Magni for comparison is at 420%)

Finley in Offense

Finley can be a no brainer in your offensive raid team as you will still be able to get great value from him even with him hitting a single target.

With all the new HOTM having elemental buffs, Finley will be able to get great value hitting at least 2-3 targets on average.

Currently, the current meta has plenty of tank position would provides buff for the allied heroes. For example, Aegir, Guinevere, Kunchen among others.

This makes Finley very strong in a offensive position, especially against Aegir as he counters Aegir‘s Defense up buff, and hits the whole team.

Read more about setting up your teams for offensive raids here.

Finley in Defense

The thing about Finley in a defensive spot in your team is that
1. The opponent sometimes will trigger Finley without intending to due to cascades of tiles.
2. Even if opponents are trying to time their buffs to avoid Finley‘s special, they might have difficulty taking down the tank position trying to avoid sending tiles into Finley.
3. You simply cannot turn on and turn off buffs at will.
4. Most opponents will bring some sort of defense up buffers, or attack up buffers in their raid teams to help counter certain Defense/Attack down debuff that you might have on your team.

The above points make Finley a nightmare to play against on a defensive team.

Marie-Thérèse Hero Review:

Lets start with the upsides.
Special Looks fun, Family bonus is pretty awesome. Her special can be used in Clutch moments to save the day and win you the round, as a sort of fail safe.

What I do not like about Marie-Thérèse is her non synergistic special.
So do you want your allies to become zombies? Or do you want to stop your allies from dying? The damage on her special is relatively negligible, it won’t make much of an effect in taking down an opponent.

Zombie Blessing can be dispelled as well. Zombies generated from Zombie Blessing have only 500 defense and attack stat, which means they are simply meat shields. The heroes would not be able to deal much damage, and would still die pretty quickly. It could be effective if you would be able to revive your tank (usually with more HP than the rest of your heroes) and have your tank survive longer to build up mana for the rest of your heroes. However, the fact that Marie-Thérèse‘s speed is slow means that opponents will be able to take down your tank way before Marie-Thérèse is able to fire.

This makes her special not effective in a Tank nor Flank position (in defense). Not effective in a Titan Fight, and limited use for an offensive position.

White Rabbit Hero Review

A holy version of Athena. But better, and faster, and the defence reduction is only on a single target.

White Rabbit in Offensive raids

White Rabbit works well in Offensive teams as a softener for a target that you are aiming to snipe off. A tank can typically survive two special skills from heroes like Lianna, Kingston, Joon etc. However, with White Rabbits debuff, you can get a guaranteed kill on a target enemy.

White Rabbit in Defence.

White Rabbit’s single target debuff make it too unreliable with the AI targetting system for it to create any synergistic effects for the rest of your team.

The damage of white rabbit’s special is also quite average. To that effect, White Rabbit is only so-so in the defence team positions.

White Rabbit VS Titans

White Rabbit is the only Generic defence reduction debuff that is available right now in the whole of the Holy Roster (From Rare heroes to Legendary heroes).

This makes White Rabbit a no brainer, along with Guardian Jackal for your titan teams.

Deals 300% damage to the enemies on the edges of the enemy formation. If there is only one enemy alive, the damage is doubled.
The enemies on the edges of the enemy formation receive 234 Poison damage over 4 turns. This cannot be dispelled.

Jabberwock Hero Review:

Lets start with the upsides.
Special Looks fun, Family bonus is pretty awesome. His/Her special can be used in Clutch moments to save the day and win you the round, as a sort of fail safe.

Jabberwock on Offensive Raids

Jabberwock has a pretty cool special skill that’s very unique. It is well designed with both upsides and downsides.

The upside is that the skill always target the more squishy wings. However, you won’t be able to kill them with just this skill. You will require some tiles and 2 or 3 activations of Jabberwock’s Sideswipe, or combined with another sniper’s special (Lianna, Sartana, Joon etc)

This means that you can completely bypass the tank in offence, especially troublesome tanks.

*I would like to know what would happen to Jabberwock skills when taunt is active on the battlefield (Queen of Hearts or Black Knight).

The downside is that you will not be able to quickly take down the tank, or pesky flanks that are about to fire quickly. Thus in offensive raids, you will want to select Jabberwock when you spot opportunities to quickly snipe heroes like Alberich or Mother North who’s always on the wing.

But if that’s the case, another sniper would be able to do the exact same task, and because the damage is more focused, you will get a 100% effectiveness…

All in all, the locked in targeting can be a boon or a bane for you, based on the enemy’s team composition and your playstyle/strategy.

Jabberwock on Defense

Jabberwock really shines on defense. His locked in targeting allows you to place him in tank or flank position, which can be devastating for a poorly planned offensive team against you.

His locked in targeting mitigates the poor AI targeting system, and allow you to quickly take out the opponents wing heroes if they are not careful with their team planning and positioning.

His Damage over Time also cannot be dispelled and would ensure that your opponent is unable to out heal the damage.

Jabberwock VS titans

Jabberwock would be able to fulfil the role of tile damage against titans. His special skill also deals a significant amount of damage to Titans.

All allies get +30% attack for 4 turns.

Puss in Boots Hero Review:

An interest special skill, first of it’s kind which triggers your friendly summoners to summon minions. (Does it trigger the Druid’s talents?)

In essence, Puss in Boots heals for 30% and 10-30% for your summoner heroes + regenerates 548 HP over 4 turns, with an attack buff.

Puss in Boots can be pretty awesome if you already have heroes that have minions, otherwise, it can be pretty dismal.. Without the other summoner effects, Puss in Boots is pretty much the same as a Boldtusk, of which I would prefer Boldtusk because he can take more hits (after talents).

This makes Puss in Boots a decent healer, which really shines when you have other heroes that have minions.

Puss in Boots overall is a pretty specialized hero, and you should only consider ascending Puss in Boots if you have other summoner heroes.

Puss in Boots in Offense

Assuming you have “summoner” heroes, Puss in Boots is really quite good on the offense, allowing you to heal for quite a substantial amount, and take out your enemies at a faster rate.

But otherwise, a Boldtusk on offense is better.

Puss in Boots in Defense

Similarly, Puss in boots needs summoner allies to really shine, and with these summoner allies Puss in Boots can really be overwhelming at the tank position.

Puss in Boots against Titans

Puss in Boots is so-so. Against (Nature) titans, your team composition will typically include Santa / Wilbur / Gormek + G. Falcon + Wu Kong / Ranvir / Tarlak. And most of these guys don’t have minions.

So you will prefer Boldtusk against Titans because of a higher attack buff. (48% instead of 30%) and more consistent heal

Snow White hero review

Empire and puzzles hero snow white

Grimforest Family bonus

Stats – Balanced, Above average.
Special: Poison Apple
Mana Speed : Slow (12 Tiles)
Dispels all buffs and status ailments from all allies and enemies.
Deals 180% damage to all enemies, and additional 15% damage per removed status effect, up to 420% damage in total.

Snow White Hero Review:

An interesting special skill.

Snow White’s special can be used as a debuff against enemies and can convert your buffs to extra damage.

Snow White’s special also dispels first before firing this means that Snow White’s special skill will always ONLY deal damage between 180% to 420% regardless of any buffs, or debuffs on herself or on your enemies.

To put into perspective, Quintus deals 270% damage to all enemies, and Magni does 420% to a Single target.

This makes Snow White absolutely devastating against teams that have Aegir as tank. Snow White will dispel both Defense increase & Spirit Link from Wilbur & Aegir‘s special and completely devastate your enemies.

Snow White also rapes heroes like Alberich, Khagan and any other heroes that provide dual buffs/debuffs.

Pretty fun!

The only downside is that her mana speed is slow, which balances Snow White our reasonably well.

Snow White in Offense

Timing of your hero specials is absolutely critical for using Snow White in your offense. You will want to ensure that Snow White is able to deal maximum damage, yet you also do not want to let important buffs expire, (heal over time, mana speed increase)

Snow white can be devastating against teams featuring Aegir tanks, but if you are unable to get the tiles for Snow White, and rely on Snow White for removing buffs from the enemies, you could be in serious trouble.

Snow White needs to be paired with a dispeller like Melendor, along with snipers that have debuff/buff effects (Magni, Alasie, Kingston etc) to help snipe down your targets after softening them up, plus adding damage to Snow white’s Special.

Snow White in Defense

Snow White is easier to play around in defense, being that you are able to bring heroes that don’t add status effects to your team.

That being said, most popular heroes have a secondary effect on their special skills that make them shine (except Lianna & Kageburado).

You can also mitigate the downside by adding heroes that add buffs/debuffs to your team.

A potential composition would feature Snow white as tanks and flanked by Zimthika/ Kingston/ Mitsuko/ Boldtusk

Snow White against Titans

Not recommended. Typically you want to have defense reductions and attack up buffs at all time. Snow White’s special would negate these effects.

Her tile damage is also rather average.

Stats – Balanced, Above average.
Special: Elemental Magic
Mana Speed : Average (10 Tiles)
Remove all dispellable and undispellable status effects from all enemies.
Changes the element of all enemies to the element they are strong against for 3 turns.
All allies get +54% attack for 4 turns.
All allies get +36% Critical Chance for 4 turns.

Guardian Chameleon Hero Review:

A very interesting and unique special skill.

Firstly, the first hero that can dispel undispellable status effects from enemies.

Secondly, the color switch. A Nature element switches to an Ice element so on and so forth.

What makes this really interesting is timing the special of Guardian Chameleon, when you have diamonds to activate.

On one hand, your diamond activation could be strong against some heroes, on the other hand, the attack up and critical hit chance can make up for the “weaker tiles”.

Taking troops out of the calculation, a simple damage calculation would be as follows.

An example would be a purple diamond vs yellow targets. Activating Elemental Magic would switch their colors to purple, making it “weaker”.

Without activation of Elemental Magic:
Damage on Strong tiles : 1 dmg *200% = 2damage per tile

With activation of elemental magic :
Damage on weaker color = (1 + 0. 54 attack up) *0.36 critical chance of *2dmg + (1+0.54 attack up) *0.64chance of no critical *0.5dmg on weaker color = 1.6016 damage per tile

Damage to neutral color = (1 + 0.54 Attack up) *0.36 Critical Chance of *2 damage + (1.54 attack up) *0.64 No Critical Damage = 2.094 damage per tile

Damage to Strong color = 2 (1 + 0.54 Attack up) * 0.36 Critical Chance of *2 + 2( 1 + 0.54 Attack up) *0.64 no critical = 4.188 damage per tile.

*Weak tiles hit for half the damage
*Critical hits deal 2x damage, (similar to weak spot on titans)
**Calculations are oversimplified and will not be accurate after factoring in defense and attack stats.
***Critical stat troops could potentially skew this calculation to make it such that it is always beneficial to activate Elemental Magic.
****Critical hits CAN stack with “strong’ tiles to give 4x damage.

In this simplified calculation we can see that the damage difference on a weak color is ~ 20%. The buffed damage will also be hitting neutral targets (in raids) which would make up on the damage lost on having “weaker” tiles.

TLDR: Better with the buff on!

Guardian Chameleon in Offense

Most defense teams are “rainbow” arrangements. Using Chameleon, you would still end up with a rainbow defense, with a different arrangement.

The color switch can be useful when you have brought Blue against a Y – R – B – G – D formation. After activation of Elemental Magic, you will be fighting against a D- G – R – B – Y formation. This would allow you to help take out the Tank quickly, and then focus on the flank immediately.

However, Chameleon’s special is very tile dependant – after activating the special, you still require the “right tiles” or a good cascade of tiles to really maximize the critical chance boost on Elemental Magic.

Personally, I would rather bring a Kiril or Boldtusk or any of the 4* healer on my offensive raid for more consistent survivability & guaranteed effectiveness of their specials.

That being said, the damage boost provided by Chameleon is still very significant.

Guardian Chameleon in Defense

Guardian Chameleon’s special does not have any significant impact on defense. Ares minus the heal and defensive stats.

Attack and critical buff stats are best made use off when there are multiple tiles on board. But on defense, the main goal is for you to kill off your opponents as quickly as possible.

Switching our opponents elements would serve to annoy your opponent, as it seldom matters what element your opponent brings to fight you

Guardian Chameleon against Titans

Example:

Guardian Chameleon against an Ice Titan and activate his special, the Ice Titan would now be a Fire titan. Which means your only viable team is an Ice team, with you spending mana potions to ensure that Chameleon has a 100% uptime. Only with such an arrangement would you be able to maximize the damage of Chameleon. However, the Nature tiles from chameleon would be halved.

Which really makes titan fights a really expensive endeavor in terms of item (mana potion) usage.

In the end, it really boils down to the depth and diversity of the heroes at your disposal. If you have a deep enough bench, and enough resources at your disposal, the additional critical damage from Guardian Chameleon could make a massive impact on your overall titan hits.

Chameleon could also be useful if you want to switch the titan’s color to a color that you are “stronger/better” against.

Overall, it is really quite hard to use chameleon consistently in a titan fight. It will definitely be worth a consideration as to whether the benefits outweigh the down sides in each individual scenario.

Definitely not a must have in a titan fight, but you can really hit the high score if you are able to maximize the buff that chameleon provides with a high uptime!

Guardian Gazelle hero Review

Special: Dance of Spirits
Mana Speed : Average (10 Tiles)

Removes all dispellable and undispellable status effects from all allies except the caster.
The Caster regenerates 612Hp over 4 turns
For 4 turns all allies except the caster start dancing the Dance of Spirits

Dance of spirits

  • Reduces all received damage by 50%
  • Immune to new status effects
  • If the caster dies, the dancer receives 100% damage and their mana is reduced by 100%
  • This effect cannot be dispelled.

Guardian Gazelle Hero Review:

Another very interesting special skill.

If you are talenting Guardian Gazelle, be sure to always choose the defensive path for her. To minimize her downside of when she dies.

Guardian Gazelle in Offense

Her special can mitigate a lot of damage your team takes, and allows you to take our your opponents at a much faster rate, without the inconsistencies that Miki/Ranvir/Wu Kong/Tarlak has.

In offense, the effect of “Caster dying” is mitigated by a large factor due to the poor targeting by the enemy AI. This reduces the risk of “Dance of Spirits” by a large percentage, making Guardian Gazelle an extremely viable support hero.

The Immunity to new status aliments also helps in offensive raids against Gravemakers (which are still quite common in the flank position)

Guardian Gazelle in Defense

First things first – NEVER put Gazelle in the tank position. Chances are Gazelle will die too quickly to allow her Dance of Spirits to have too much upside.

Guardian Gazelle does fit a Flank position. Having Gazelle activate her special when the tank is still alive can be VERY devastating for your opponents, especially if they are unable to quickly snipe out Gazelle.

That being said, Gazelle can be played around by bringing Snipers and Dispellers (to dispel any buffs on Gazelle, and the heal over time)

Opponents can also “maximize” the downside the Gazelle has by letting Gazelle activate Dance of Spirits followed by a quick snipe to Gazelle.

Gazelle CAN be used in the flank position in defense, but needs to be supported with strong Defensive tanks like Aegir, Black Knight or Guinevere.

Tank – C
Flank – A
Wing – B

Guardian Gazelle against Titans

Gazelle is biggest downside is being unable to synergize with other heroes buff skills, unlike Miki/Tarlak/Ranvir/Wu Kong.

This means that her attack boost is capped at 100%, and no critical chance boost.

The other titan heroes allow up to 150-170% attack increase. However they do not provide the same defensive capabilities as Guardian Gazelle does to the rest of your team.

Worth including in your line up against Dark Titans, but not against the other elements.
